Flagging and Communications: General Information

Waterford Hills Road Racing needs lots of volunteers! Come out and join our team of flaggers, and have some fun. There are no membership fees to join, and no other license required. Here is the information you need to know in order to come out and work a corner.

Registration for Flagging

Saturday: 8:15am to 9:00am
Sunday: 8:30am to 9:00am

Registration on Saturday takes place at the Range House, the building on the left when you come through the main gate of OCSC. Registration opens at 8:00am on Saturday, and closes at 11:00am both Saturday and Sunday. Sunday morning registration for F&C takes place at the guard shack, just outside of the paddock gate (regular registration opens at 9:00am). If you know that you'll be at the track, but can't make it until later in the day, contact Dave Martens to make arrangements for late arrival.

Morning Meeting

The morning flag meeting takes place in the press room at the tower (first room on the left at the top of the stairs) at 9:15am on Saturday and Sunday. Information and corner assignments are covered at the meeting, so please try to be there on time. There will be a Captains meeting immediately following the general meeting.

Racing Format

Racing starts at 10:00am both Saturday and Sunday, and ends no later than 6:00pm both days (by law). Pretty civilized hours, for a race event! There are a total of 7 race groups each day, with the addition of 2 co-driver race groups on Saturday only. Groups consist of a variety of car types, including open and closed wheel cars. On Saturday, each race group has one practice/qualifying session, and races in the afternoon. On Sunday, there are 7 class races in the morning, followed by 7 feature races in the afternoon. You can't beat that for excitement!

What to bring

If you have never been to Waterford, or are a first time flagger, here is a list of items you should have with you.
  • Long pants- you must be wearing long pants, preferably white, in order to flag.
  • Long sleeved shirt- preferably white, but definitely not yellow, blue, red or black. Long sleeves help to protect you from the sun, and from any hot car parts you may come in contact with.
  • Gloves- preferably orange, but any color will do.
  • Rain gear- for, you got it, the wet stuff!
  • Optional items- hat, sunscreen, bug spray, sunglasses, drinks, folding chair, umbrella, knife or seat-belt cutter, whistle with quick disconnect, paper, pens, and anything else you can think of!

What is provided for volunteers?

  • Lunch tickets- for the concession stand. Lunch break is generally 45 minutes.
  • Soda, water and other refreshments- provided for all volunteers at the afternoon break, which is generally about 30 minutes. Pop, water and snacks are generously donated by the drivers.
  • Worker Awards- again donated by the drivers. You may win a hat, t-shirts, or a variety of other items. (Not everyone wins every weekend, but you can't win if you're not there!)

Never flagged before?

You've never flagged before, but you would like to come out and work a turn? Excellent! We would love to train you, and give you the opportunity to work a corner. There are two options. The first (and best) option is to attend our Flag School . For more details, see our Flag School page, or contact Assistant Chief and Training Coordinator Lynn Bertin and we'll sign you up. The second option, if you're unable to make the Flag School, is just to come out to the track and register for Flagging & Communications (remember to let us know that it's your first time), and we'll train you on the job. Sound like fun? You bet! If you love the thrill of motor racing, then you can't beat working a corner. It really is the place to be on race day!
