How-To Guide to Waterford Hills Racing

So you’ve seen some races at Waterford Hills Road Racing Inc. (WHRRI), or maybe even brought your street car out for an open track day, and now you’ve caught the racing “bug”. Want to know more about getting in on the racing action here at WHRRI? Unsure how to go about making your racing dreams a reality? Here’s a quick guide to getting started at WHRRI.

Observation
The best way to begin is to start watching races from the other side of the fence. There are two ways to do this:
  1. Volunteer to help flag at a corner. Working with our experienced flaggers at a corner will give you a solid understanding of the race flags we use and what they mean. It also gives you an up close look at the various cars and classes that race here at WHRRI, which will help when it comes time for you to decide what type of car you would like to race. You will also get to see some fine examples of both the right and wrong ways to drive a car around our track. Contact our Flagging & Communications Chief for more information.
  2. Volunteer to crew for a WHRRI driver. Don’t worry about your wrenching skills – if you can change a tire or use a stopwatch, you can be a crew member. This experience will give you a better understanding of what it takes to get a car on the track, and the opportunity to wander through our race paddock as well. You will find that our drivers are more than willing to answer any questions you might have. Visit our bulletin board and post a note offering your services to drivers that might need a hand.

Preparation
Now that you have some ideas about what type of car you’d like to race, you need to find one. You have three options:
  1. Rent a racecar. Of the three options, this is the easiest and least expensive way to begin. The owner is generally responsible for the car’s maintenance and transportation of the car to the track – you simply need to show up and drive it. You won’t have to worry about a tow vehicle, trailer or storage. You will be responsible for any damage to the car during your race, however. This is the best way to ease into racing without making a big commitment to a type of car that you might not enjoy as much as you thought you would. Check the swap and sell section of our bulletin board for racecars for rent.
  2. Purchase a race prepared car. If you feel the need to own a racecar, buying one that is ready to race is your best bet. You will also need a way to transport your racecar to and from the track, which means obtaining a tow vehicle and some sort of trailer. Many race prepared cars will be packaged with a trailer. Visit the swap and sell area of our bulletin board to view some of the cars that other WHRRI racers are currently selling.
  3. Build your own racecar. This is the most expensive of the three options, both in money and time. In general, racecars do NOT appreciate – you will spend far more in building a racecar than you will receive when you sell it. The car will need to be race prepared according to the SCCA General Competition Rules (GCR). Most drivers don’t build their own cars until experience has taught them exactly what they want and need in a racecar.

Training
Once you’ve observed for a while and gotten yourself a racecar, it’s time to learn how to drive it. Road racing isn’t just about how fast you can make a car go – at WHRRI, you need advance skills in car control. Before you can race at WHRRI, you must attend a driver school and obtain a racing license, either through WHRRI or another sanctioning body such as SCCA or NASA. The WHRRI Driver’s School is usually held in late April. See our information page for exact dates. For the WHRRI Driver’s School, you will need:
  • A copy of the GCR
  • A race prepared car that meets the requirements of the GCR and the WHRRI Rules & Regulations
  • Personal racing equipment, including a helmet, suit and gloves, which also meet the requirements of the GCR
  • Patience and good listening skills
Once you have successfully completed the WHRRI Driver’s School, you will receive a novice license that will be upgraded to a full competition license later in the year with approval from your instructor and the chief steward.

Membership
You do not need to be a WHRRI member in order to race here, but non-members:
  • Must have a current competition license from another sanctioning body
  • Pay higher race entry fees
  • Are not eligible to compete for our Team, Class, or Top Ten Championships
In order to become a WHRRI member, you must first become a member of our parent club, the Oakland County Sportsman’s Club (OCSC). Visit the Credentials section of our website for more information about WHRRI membership and licensing. WHRRI General Membership meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month at 8:00pm in the OCSC Clubhouse.

In addition to this guide, you should also take a look at Waterford Hills for Dummies for more information about racing at WHRRI.
