Lap Time Predictions (Oh what fun!)

Postby finding_beans » Mon Dec 03, 2012 3:18 pm

Bored without racing? Time for some bench racing! What's more fun than trying to predict lap times? Let the educated guesses begin ...

Before
Weight = 2500 lbs
Power = 145 WHP / 125 WTQ
Lap Time = 1:17.0

After
Weight = 2400 lbs (4% reduction)
Power = 190 WHP / 135 WTQ (same engine)
Lap Time = ?

I know this isn't much to go on, but that's what makes it fun.

Those certainly aren't SOHC Neon engine numbers. :lol:

I'll bite ... 1:15.5xx :roll:

Which car is this? That time seems incredibly fast for 2500lbs and only 145WHP at Waterford.

I'd say closer to 1'16.00 with new numbers.

You switching classes next year Matt?

You're right Jim, these aren't SOHC Neon numbers. No Sean, I'm not changing classes next year but who knows about 2014.

The "Before" is a theoretical car, but there are at least three cars with a similar weight/power ratio who can run 1:17.0 at Waterford. Granted each is tops in their class.

I was guessing a 0.5 second reduction on the weight decrease and a 1.5 second reduction on the power increase to get down to a 1:15.0 at Waterford. I thought this was too optimistic but based on Alex's weight/power ratio with a 1:16.0 lap time, I think a 1:15.0 is acheivable with the "After" spec's I'm assuming.

I know there is a lot more to this than the weight/power ratio, but it's something to start with.
