Which HANS Device

Post by ADPWL1 » Mon Feb 22, 2016 9:29 pm

Starting to acquire gear for school and the season.

Anyone using the Adjustable HANS Device? Thoughts? What about the connection to the helmet; using the Quick Click or the standard connection?

Thanks!

As the local HANS dealer, I've sold primarily the Adjustable model over the last 3 years. They have all had the standard attachment.

Takes the guesswork out - hard to make a call for the non-adjustable one, 'less you're going super-lightweight and want carbon.

I haven't had much reason to complain about the standard tethers. The only pain is if your posts on the helmet are not properly adjusted or move... which just means more loctite.

The 2015 helmets have threaded inserts in them, so there is no reason for the HANS posts to move.

Is there any requirement to have a HANS recertified?

Yeah, new helmets (and even some SA10 helmets have inserts - just that it's required by SA15 spec) have them...

Re: Gary's question - if you have an FIA sticker on your HANS, no, it's "good for life," but if it only has an SFI sticker, it must be recertified every 5 years or something.

That reminds me, I gotta check mine... sadly, being an old one, it was produced before either spec or sticker existed. When I sent it in for cert, they only gave me the SFI sticker. Of course. Better revenue stream.

New devices, last I heard, come with both stickers...

Oh, almost forgot. It's an open question on whether or not the dating provision of the GCR as relates to the SFI cert will be enforced at any SCCA event...

If you want a HANS with both Cert's, it needs to be ordered that way.
That is the only way we order them.
The $10.00 extra cost or because they don't think like me, may be the reason why others dealers don't, I guess.

The GCR does not state that the head & neck restraint needs to be re-certified.
It just needs to have(see quote from GCR Feb 2016)

" The use of a head and neck restraint system that has been certified in
accordance with SFI 38.1, FIA 8858-2002 or 8858-2010 is
required; an SFI 38.1 or FIA 8858-2002 or 8858-2010 label
must be properly affixed to the device"

So if the label is missing, then Yes it will need a Cert.

Sent my HANS to the source listed on Tuesday
Received it on Thursday.......Certified & shipped on Friday
Great turn around.......good to go for the next five years
Make sure you check the regs with who you race
Two of my groups had no requirement to re-cert........ but the third one did after five years
