Saab 9-7x 5.3 Problem

Not mine, a co-worker. It's an '09. At 40k he said the engine was making a rattling noise and burning oil. Took it to Saab of Troy and they said nothing wrong, it should burn oil. Took it back at 48k with the problem getting worse, now burning a quart every 1000 miles. They said no problem, that's normal. Well, he's not a car guy so at 60k the engine lets go. They say, too bad, out of warranty.
Now he's left holding the bag so to speak.
Is that 5.3 engine the same 5.3 that GM uses in all of their vehicles. I had an '01 GMC 5.3 with 180k and it didn't hardly use a drop of oil between 4k oil changes.
Anyone have any insight on how he should proceed? He's pretty upset as you can imagine.

Generation IV

First introduced in 2005, the Generation IV Vortec 5300 engines share all the improvements and refinements found in other Generation IV engines. At present, four versions of the 5300 are in production: 2 iron block versions (LY5 and LMG) and 2 aluminum block versions (LH6 and LC9). All versions feature the Active Fuel Management system. The LH8 does not incorporate Active Fuel Management.
LH6

The LH6 with Active Fuel Management replaced the LM4 for 2005, and was the first of the Generation IV small block V8 truck engines to go into production. It is the aluminum block counterpart to the LY5.

LH6 applications:

2004–2009 Chevrolet TrailBlazer including EXT (through 2006)
2005–2009 GMC Envoy Denali
2005–2006 GMC Envoy XL
2005 GMC Envoy XUV
2005–2007 Buick Rainier
2005–2009 Saab 9-7X
2007 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
2007-2009 GMC Sierra 1500

If it is indeed an AFM/DOD there is known issue with oil consumption. Google service bulletin 11-06-01-007, it describes the issue. It happens to be for the LS4, but there were a few RPOs affected.
